We recently released an ebook on why and how to test wayfinding onsite. We summarized it in an earlier blog post. In this post, we're sharing the simple checklist that is in the ebook to help you actually check off features when you go onsite.
So, when you get onsite, here is a checklist of specific things to test. Print this list and you can then check off features as you go. Or download the full guide and take that with you!
Pre-Visit |

Satellite sites |
Do all sites (hospitals and satellite sites) have photos, descriptions, hours, phone, address, and links? Can you select a site and book an appointment or save your spot? |
Navigation to satellite sites |
Can you ask the system to take you to the location and be directed there? For example, you choose an urgent care near you, ask to save a spot, and then click a button to be navigated there. |
Navigate from reminder |
Can you click to navigate to an appointment from a text or email reminder? |
Parking |
Parking area |
Does the system navigate you to the correct parking area for the appointment? Many health system campuses have multiple parking areas. |
Parking spot |
Will the system save the parking spot accurately? Is it reading the correct floor of a parking garage? Can you go back manually and save the spot from another location if you forgot? |
Parking to point of care |
Can the system navigate you to your point of care from parking and indicate important stops along the way like checking in at a desk for a visitor pass? |
Return to parking spot |
Is it easy to return to your parking spot with a single click? |
Health System Campus |
Campus points of interest |
Are there points of interest across the campus? Can you see them on the map? Search for them? Be navigated to them? A smaller building on a campus may not be mapped on the inside, but people still need to find those locations and be navigated to them to cover the whole patient journey. |
Campus-level blue dot navigation |
Is there blue dot navigation through the campus between indoor and outdoor locations and mapped and unmapped buildings? |
Indoor and outdoor transitions |
How does the experience handle moving between mapped buildings and going outdoors? Does it boot you out to a third-party or stay in the same experience? |
Individual Mapped Building |
Search features |
Can you search for patient rooms and points of interest? Can you sort the search by proximity or other factors? For example, searching for the nearest restroom or dining option. |
Locations on a map |
Can you pick out a location on a map and navigate there? Is it easy to see the entire building, including the different floors on a map? Are there easy-to-see icons for restrooms, stairs, elevators, etc. |
Alerts on arrival |
Does it show you a picture of your destination? Are you alerted when you arrive? |
Transitions |
Does the navigation easily transition from one place to another such as outdoors to indoors or moving from one floor to another. Does it give you instructions on what to do next? For example, when you enter the building does it say to go left to the registration desk? When you exit an elevator does it tell you to go right down the hall? |
Multiple floors |
How does it handle moving between floors? Does it keep navigating seamlessly or require you to stop and start navigation between floors? Does it detect if you get off on the wrong floor? |
Accessibility |
Does the system support accessible routes? Are there features to help people who are hearing or vision impaired? Does it support multiple languages? |
